Best Dialogue-Driven Mystery Games
Mystery games where talking to people is the investigation, from long detective RPGs to short replayable whodunnits.
The best dialogue-driven mystery games solve their cases mainly through conversation: what people say, what they avoid and what you choose to ask. Top picks:
- Disco Elysium: a detective RPG where dialogue and skill checks drive almost everything.
- Pentiment: a murder investigation in 16th-century Bavaria, told through conversations and choices.
- Paradise Killer: you interrogate suspects on a surreal island.
- Contradiction: Spot The Liar and The Shapeshifting Detective: live-action questioning.
- Tangle Tower: questioning suspects in a mansion.
- Overboard!: you talk your way out of a murder.
Coming later, Murder Book is an upcoming interrogation game where the whole case happens in conversation.
Key takeaways
- Dialogue-driven mysteries make conversation the main way you uncover the truth.
- They range from long, text-heavy RPGs to short, replayable stories.
- Some let you choose what to say; others let you choose what to challenge.
- Live-action video, illustrated adventures and visual novels all fit the genre.
- Murder Book is an upcoming mystery built entirely around interrogation conversations.
What makes a mystery game "dialogue-driven"?
In many mystery games, conversation is a way to receive clues. In a dialogue-driven mystery, conversation is where the investigation actually happens. That usually means:
- Choices matter. What you ask, and how, changes what you learn.
- People are the evidence. Statements, evasions and changing stories are the clues.
- Reading between the lines is rewarded as much as collecting objects.
If you specifically want to question suspects directly, see Best Games Where You Question Suspects. This list is broader: it includes any mystery where talking is the heart of the game.

Disco Elysium – The Final Cut
Disco Elysium (ZA/UM, 2019; The Final Cut in 2021) is a detective role-playing game where you investigate a murder almost entirely through dialogue. Your character's skills take part in conversations, and dice-roll skill checks decide many outcomes. There is no combat in the traditional sense. It is long and very text-heavy, which is exactly its appeal.
Best for: players who want the deepest possible dialogue-driven investigation.
Pentiment
Pentiment (Obsidian Entertainment, Xbox Game Studios, 2022) is set in 16th-century Bavaria. As the artist Andreas Maler, you investigate murders through the conversations you have with the people around you, and the choices you make along the way.
Best for: players who enjoy history, character and ambiguity.
Paradise Killer
Paradise Killer (Kaizen Game Works, Fellow Traveller, 2020) sets a murder investigation on a surreal island. You gather evidence, interrogate suspects and build your case, deciding for yourself when you know enough.
Best for: players who like open-ended investigation and strong characters.
Contradiction: Spot The Liar
Contradiction: Spot The Liar (Baggy Cat, 2015) is a live-action mystery in which you question villagers and point out contradictions in their statements. Conversation is both the clue and the test.
Best for: players who want to catch people out in their own words.
The Shapeshifting Detective
The Shapeshifting Detective (D'Avekki Studios, Wales Interactive, 2018) is a full-motion video murder mystery. You question suspects and can shapeshift into other characters to unlock private conversations. The murderer is chosen at random at the start of each game.
Best for: players who want a replayable video whodunnit.
Tangle Tower
Tangle Tower (SFB Games, 2019) is a point-and-click mystery set in a mansion. You explore, collect clues, question suspects and solve puzzles to identify a murderer. It balances conversation with light puzzle-solving.
Best for: players who want a lighter, character-driven whodunnit.
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy (Capcom, 2019 collection) brings together the first three Ace Attorney games. You investigate cases and defend your clients in court, where testimony takes centre stage.
Best for: players who like courtroom drama.
Overboard!
Overboard! (inkle, 2021) casts you as the killer aboard a cruise ship. You have eight in-game hours to steer conversations and evidence away from yourself. Steam says one play-through lasts about 30–45 minutes, and it is built to be replayed.
Best for: players who want a short, replayable dialogue mystery.
How do you choose a dialogue-driven mystery?
- Most depth: Disco Elysium.
- Most atmosphere and history: Pentiment.
- Live-action performances: Contradiction or The Shapeshifting Detective.
- Shortest session: Overboard!
- Courtroom arguments: Ace Attorney. See Games Like Ace Attorney.
Is there an upcoming dialogue-driven mystery game?
Murder Book: The Art of Interrogation is an upcoming narrative interrogation game from Gungrounds, an independent studio in Zagreb, Croatia. In Murder Book, the conversation is the whole case. You listen to a suspect, recognise behaviours such as avoidance or fabrication with the help of an in-game casebook, connect statements that do not fit together and choose how to press, with approaches such as Build Trust or Confrontation. Cases are designed to take 5–10 minutes.
Murder Book is in development for PC (Steam) and mobile, with release currently planned for the end of Q2 2027. See What Is Murder Book?
