Games Like Unheard
Mystery games for players who enjoyed solving crimes by listening closely to voices and piecing together who said what in Unheard.
If you enjoyed Unheard, look for games where the evidence is what people say, and your job is to work out who said it, when, and whether it holds together. The closest matches are:
- Her Story: search a police database of interview clips with one woman.
- Telling Lies: search secretly recorded video conversations by the words spoken in them.
- Contradiction: Spot The Liar: question villagers and point out contradictions in their statements.
- Immortality: piece together what happened to an actress from film footage.
- The Operator: analyse photos, video and records to help field agents.
- The Case of the Golden Idol: reconstruct who did what from frozen scenes.
- Orwell: Keeping an Eye On You: profile suspects from their chats, emails and posts.
If listening closely to people is what you enjoy, upcoming Murder Book builds a whole game around studying what a suspect says and avoids saying.
Key takeaways
- Unheard's appeal is solving a crime from voices alone: identifying speakers and following conversations.
- Her Story and Telling Lies are the closest matches: testimony you search and interpret yourself.
- Contradiction focuses on catching statements that do not fit together.
- The Operator, The Case of the Golden Idol and Orwell offer the same "reconstruct it yourself" feeling through other kinds of evidence.
- Murder Book is an upcoming interrogation game about unreliable accounts, planned for the end of Q2 2027.
What makes Unheard different?
Unheard – Voices of Crime (NEXT Studios, 2019) takes away almost everything except sound. You listen to audio recordings of a crime scene and work out who each voice belongs to and who did it. A developer note on Steam said the first version had five chapters.
Few games rely on audio in this way, so the best matches share its spirit rather than its format:
- Testimony as the main evidence. What people say, and to whom, is the puzzle.
- Fragments rather than a guided story. You assemble the sequence of events.
- Identifying people and their roles from limited information.
- No combat. The challenge is attention and patience.

Her Story
Her Story (Sam Barlow, 2015) gives you a 1990s police computer and a database of video clips from seven interviews with a British woman about her missing husband. You type search terms, watch clips and slowly build an understanding of what happened. Like Unheard, it trusts you to notice what matters in what people say. Our full list of games like Her Story has more in this style.
Why it fits: close attention to spoken testimony, assembled out of order.
Telling Lies
Telling Lies (Sam Barlow, Half Mermaid, published by Annapurna Interactive, 2019) lets you search a stolen NSA database of secretly recorded video conversations by typing words, then watch the clips where those words are spoken. Many conversations show only one side, so you often have to infer who is on the other end.
Why it fits: like Unheard, you work out who is talking to whom and why.
Contradiction: Spot The Liar
Contradiction: Spot The Liar (Baggy Cat, 2015) is an all-video murder mystery. As detective Jenks, you explore a village, question characters and point out contradictions in their statements. More picks with this focus are in Games Like Contradiction: Spot the Liar.
Why it fits: the evidence is what people say, and the skill is noticing when it does not match.
Immortality
Immortality (Half Mermaid, 2022) asks you to explore footage from three unreleased films starring the actress Marissa Marcel, using match cuts to jump between scenes. Your goal is to work out what happened to her.
Why it fits: you reconstruct a hidden story from recorded fragments.
The Operator
The Operator (Bureau 81, 2024) casts you as an operator at a fictional agency called the FDI. You use in-game tools such as databases and photo, video and chemical analysers to help field agents solve crimes.
Why it fits: you investigate from recordings and records, never from the scene itself.
The Case of the Golden Idol
The Case of the Golden Idol (Color Gray Games, published by Playstack, 2022) presents 12 mysterious deaths as frozen scenes. You gather clues and reconstruct what happened by working out names, motives and events. Identifying who each person is, which is central to Unheard, is a big part of the challenge here too.
Why it fits: you rebuild a crime and its cast from limited evidence.
Orwell: Keeping an Eye On You
Orwell (Osmotic Studios, published by Daedalic Entertainment, 2016) casts you as a government surveillance researcher. You search web pages, social media, chats, emails and private files to profile suspects in a series of terror attacks, and you decide which information to pass on.
Why it fits: like Unheard's eavesdropping, you listen in on private lives and decide what it means.
Which one should you play next?

Is there an upcoming game about listening to unreliable accounts?
Murder Book: The Art of Interrogation is an upcoming narrative interrogation game from Gungrounds, an independent studio in Zagreb, Croatia. Unheard asks you to piece together what happened from voices. Murder Book asks you to sit across from one of those voices and question it.
The focus is on accounts that are incomplete or unreliable. The Gungrounds press kit names Fabrication, Avoidance, Narrative Gaps and Emotional Leakage among the behaviours the game deals with. Development screenshots show an evidence board linking fragments of testimony, such as "I NEVER met her!" and "I had no idea", to a fabricated description of a gun. A single slip is not proof on its own; the work is in seeing how the fragments fit, or fail to. Cases are designed for focused 5–10-minute sessions.
Murder Book is in development for PC (Steam) and mobile, with release currently planned for the end of Q2 2027. See How Murder Book Turns Interrogation Into Gameplay.
