Mystery Games You Can Finish in Under an Hour

Mystery games with official play times of about an hour or less, plus longer games whose single cases fit one sitting.

Very few mystery games publish an official play time, so a trustworthy list of games you can finish in under an hour is short. The clearest confirmed example is Overboard!, whose Steam page says one play-through lasts about 30–45 minutes. Two more sit right on the line: the developers of Frog Detective 1: The Haunted Island and Frog Detective 2: The Case of the Invisible Wizard give each an estimated completion time of about one hour. Beyond those, several longer games are split into individual cases you can complete in a single sitting, although their developers do not publish per-case timings. Coming later, Murder Book is an interrogation game whose cases are designed to take 5–10 minutes each.

How were these play times checked?

Play time depends on the player. Someone who reads every line or tries every option will take longer than someone rushing to the answer. Community estimates vary widely, so this page uses only times stated by the developer or on an official store page. Where no official time exists, we describe how a game is structured instead of guessing.

That rules out many games people often call "short". It also means a game missing from this list is not necessarily long: its developer may simply not have published a number.

Overboard!

Overboard! (inkle, 2021) is a reverse whodunnit. You play the killer, and you have eight in-game hours aboard a cruise ship to steer conversations and evidence away from yourself. Steam says: "One play-through lasts about 30 - 45 minutes, but achieving the perfect crime run will take a lot longer."

That second half matters. A single run fits comfortably inside an hour, but the game is designed to be replayed in search of a better outcome. You can play one run and stop, or come back for another.

It is on Windows and Mac through Steam, and inkle's official site also links to GOG, Nintendo Switch, the App Store and Google Play.

Best for: players who want a complete mystery in one short evening, with a reason to return.

Frog Detective 1: The Haunted Island

Frog Detective 1: The Haunted Island (Grace Bruxner and Thomas Bowker, 2018) is a light-hearted 3D mystery. You play The Detective, a frog, investigating a ghost that has been haunting a sloth. Finding clues and questioning suspects make up the investigation. Steam gives it a "1 hour estimated completion time". Because that is an estimate of about an hour, some players will finish just under it and some just over.

Best for: players who want a gentle, funny mystery with no pressure.

Frog Detective 2: The Case of the Invisible Wizard

Frog Detective 2: The Case of the Invisible Wizard (Grace Bruxner and Thomas Bowker, 2019) sends The Detective to find out who ruined a town's welcome celebration for a mysterious Invisible Wizard. Its Steam page also states a "1 hour estimated completion time". Both games are on Windows and Mac.

A third game, Frog Detective 3: Corruption at Cowboy County (2022), completes the series, but its Steam page does not state a play time.

Best for: anyone who enjoyed the first case and wants another of the same size.

What if you want one case, not a whole game?

If your real goal is a mystery you can resolve in one sitting, a game does not have to be short overall. Several longer games are made of self-contained cases:

The Case of the Golden Idol has 12 cases, each a frozen scene to examine and explain.
The Rise of the Golden Idol has 20 cases in the same format.
Scene Investigators has 8 case scenarios built around reconstructed crime scenes.

Which confirmed games run a little longer?

If you can spare an extra hour or so, two co-operative mystery puzzle games publish official averages:

The Past Within (Rusty Lake, 2022) is a co-op-only point-and-click adventure with 2 chapters and, according to Steam, an average play time of 2 hours. Both players need their own copy.
Tick Tock: A Tale for Two (Other Tales Interactive, 2019) is a co-op puzzle adventure with an average play time of 2.5 hours, according to its Steam page.

Neither is a crime investigation, but both are built around piecing together a mystery by sharing information.

Why are short mysteries worth playing?

A short mystery holds the whole puzzle in your head at once. You do not forget a clue between sessions, and the ending lands while the setup is still fresh. Short games also suit replaying: in a mystery with multiple outcomes, a second run takes little time and often shows you what you missed. Is there an upcoming mystery game with cases under ten minutes?

Yes. Murder Book: The Art of Interrogation is an upcoming narrative interrogation game from Gungrounds, an independent studio in Zagreb, Croatia. Its press sheet says cases are designed for 5–10-minute sessions, "ideal for mobile or quick PC play." Rather than a whole game you finish in an hour, it offers individual cases short enough to complete during a break. Each one centres on an interrogation, where you read the suspect's behaviour, connect statements that contradict each other and decide how to press. Development materials show branching case maps with multiple endings, so a short case can still reward a second attempt.
