What makes Gamedec different?
Gamedec (Anshar Studios, 2021) is a single-player isometric RPG set in 22nd-century Warsaw City. You play a "gamedec", a private investigator who solves crimes inside virtual worlds. Steam describes it as a non-combat game: you gather information from witnesses and suspects, use a Codex and Deduction system to work through facts and evidence, and reach your own answer. The store page says the game adapts to your choices and "never judges", and it compares its approach to tabletop RPGs, where situations can be tackled from several angles.
The current Steam release is Gamedec – Definitive Edition. The official website links to Steam, GOG, the Epic Games Store, Nintendo Switch and PlayStation.
A good game like Gamedec usually offers:
- Investigation through dialogue, where what you know changes what you can say.
- Deduction you carry out yourself, not just clues collected automatically.
- Choices with consequences and more than one way through a case.
- Little or no combat.

Disco Elysium – The Final Cut
Disco Elysium (ZA/UM, 2019; The Final Cut in 2021) is a detective role-playing game driven by dialogue. You investigate a murder while 24 personality skills speak up in conversation, and dice-roll skill checks decide outcomes. There is no combat in the traditional sense. It is long and text-heavy.
Why it fits: like Gamedec, it treats detective work as a role-playing game about who your investigator is.
Lacuna – A Sci-Fi Noir Adventure
Lacuna (DigiTales Interactive, 2021) casts you as CDI agent Neil Conrad in a science-fiction noir story. You question people, collect evidence and make deductions. Steam's description says wrong answers are not undone, and the story branches on your choices, with multiple endings.
Why it fits: a futuristic setting, deduction you commit to and no combat.
AI: The Somnium Files
AI: The Somnium Files (Spike Chunsoft, 2019) follows detective Kaname Date, who investigates crime scenes as well as dreams to find clues, and interrogates suspects. The official page mentions "3 special vision modes". Store and official descriptions do not describe combat.
Why it fits: investigation that crosses between the real world and an inner one, as Gamedec moves between reality and virtual worlds.
Nobody Wants to Die
Nobody Wants to Die (Critical Hit Games, published by PLAION and Deep Silver, 2024) is set in New York in 2329. As Detective James Karra, you use a time-manipulation augmentation and advanced technology to reconstruct what happened before each murder. Its store text does not mention combat, but we have not confirmed that it has none.
Why it fits: future technology changes how a detective investigates.
Shadows of Doubt
Shadows of Doubt (ColePowered Games, published by Fireshine Games) is a detective simulation in a procedurally generated city. You gather evidence, break into apartments, hack security systems and track down suspects. The developer calls it "a detective stealth game", and some confrontation is possible.
Why it fits: open-ended cases in a city where you choose how to approach each lead.
Pentiment
Pentiment (Obsidian Entertainment, published by Xbox Game Studios, 2022) is a narrative adventure set in 16th-century Bavaria. As the artist Andreas Maler, you investigate murders through conversation and choices.
Why it fits: the setting could not be further from Gamedec's, but the focus on dialogue, choice and your own judgement is similar. See Games Like Pentiment.
Paradise Killer
Paradise Killer (Kaizen Game Works, published by Fellow Traveller, 2020) is set on a surreal open-world island. You explore to gather evidence, interrogate suspects and build your case. More picks are in Games Like Paradise Killer.
Why it fits: a stylised, strange world where you decide what the evidence adds up to.

Is there an upcoming detective game without combat?
Murder Book: The Art of Interrogation is an upcoming narrative interrogation game from Gungrounds, an independent studio in Zagreb, Croatia. Gamedec solves crimes through conversation, knowledge and deduction. Murder Book concentrates on one part of that: the conversation with a suspect. Observation and questioning are at its centre.
You examine unreliable stories, behavioural changes, narrative gaps, avoidance and contradictions. Development screenshots show a technique menu with Build Trust, Futility, Bluffing, Baiting, Demonstration and Confrontation. The only technique with an official description so far is Build Trust: "fostering an environment where the suspect feels comfortable and secure enough to communicate openly". Cases are designed for focused 5–10-minute sessions.
Murder Book is in development for PC (Steam) and mobile, with release currently planned for the end of Q2 2027. Read What Is Murder Book? for an overview.
