Mystery Games to Play as a Couple

Co-op mysteries built for two players and single-player detective games that are easy to share with a partner.

The best mystery games to play as a couple either give each of you a separate role, or give you plenty to discuss while one person holds the controls. A few games are officially built for two:

The Past Within: a co-op-only mystery puzzle game where one player is in the past and the other in the future.
Tick Tock: A Tale for Two: a two-player co-op puzzle adventure where neither of you sees the full picture.

Many single-player mysteries also work well together, taking turns or deciding as a pair:

What makes a mystery game good for couples?

A good mystery for two keeps both people involved. That happens in one of two ways.

Built-in co-operation. Each player has information the other needs, so you have to describe, listen and reason together.
Shared deduction. One person plays, but the decisions are joint. Games with lots of reading, watching and theorising suit this best, because the passenger has as much to do as the driver.

Mystery games built for two players

The Past Within

The Past Within (Rusty Lake, 2022) is a co-op-only point-and-click adventure. One player is in the past and the other in the future, and you describe what you see to solve puzzles and uncover a mystery. Steam states that both players need their own copy and a way to talk to each other. The developer's description says it works across PC, Mac, iOS and Android, and lists 2 chapters with an average play time of 2 hours, plus a recommendation to replay from the other perspective.

Best for: couples who like atmospheric puzzles and talking things through.

Tick Tock: A Tale for Two

Tick Tock: A Tale for Two (Other Tales Interactive, 2019) traps two players in an eerie clockwork world. Neither of you has the full picture, so you combine what appears on both screens to escape. Steam says you play on two devices, locally or remotely, with a voice connection, and gives an average play time of 2.5 hours. It is a mystery puzzle adventure rather than a crime story.

Best for: a single evening of co-operative puzzle solving.

DUAL PROTOCOL: The Case of Eva & Miles

DUAL PROTOCOL: The Case of Eva & Miles (AEGEAN CRAFTERS, Rock Paper Publisher) is an asymmetric noir puzzle game about a murder at Castellari Manor. One player is Agent Eva in the field; the other is Analyst Miles working with records and terminals. You cannot see each other's screens and progress only through conversation. It is not yet released: as of September 2026 its Steam page lists 2 October 2026 for Windows, and indie release dates can change.

Best for: couples who want a true two-person crime investigation.

Single-player mysteries that work well together

Frog Detective 3: Corruption at Cowboy County

Frog Detective 3: Corruption at Cowboy County (Grace Bruxner and Thomas Bowker, 2022) is a single-player mystery, but its Steam page suggests you "play along with friends as you take turns reading out the dialogue". Its family-friendly, witty tone makes that easy.

Best for: a relaxed, funny mystery with voices included.

Her Story

Her Story (Sam Barlow, 2015) asks you to search a police database for clips of a woman being interviewed about her missing husband. Best for: couples who enjoy picking apart a story.

The Case of the Golden Idol

The Case of the Golden Idol (Color Gray Games, Playstack, 2022) presents 12 deaths as frozen scenes, and you fill in names, motives and events. Every deduction is a decision you can discuss before committing, which makes it a good fit for two minds and one screen.

Best for: competitive thinkers who like to check each other's logic.

Overboard!

Overboard! (inkle, 2021) casts you as the killer on a cruise ship, trying to escape blame. Steam says a play-through lasts about 30–45 minutes, so it is easy to take turns: one person plays a run while the other watches, then you swap and try a different approach.

Best for: couples who like a little friendly rivalry.

How do you choose a mystery game to play together?

If you both want your own controls: pick a co-op game, and check whether you each need a copy.
If one of you rarely plays games: choose a single-player mystery with lots of reading or watching, such as Her Story, and share the decisions.

Murder Book: The Art of Interrogation is an upcoming narrative interrogation game from Gungrounds, an independent studio in Zagreb, Croatia. It is not described as a multiplayer game, but its format suits playing side by side. Cases are designed for focused 5–10-minute sessions, so it is easy to take turns case by case. Each case centres on an interrogation: you read a suspect's behaviour with the help of an in-game casebook, connect statements that contradict each other and choose how to press. Two people will not always read the same behaviour the same way, which is part of what makes a suspect worth discussing.
